3 Frustrating Boss Behaviors (and How to Deal)

Exhausted businesswoman having a headache in modern office. Mature creative woman working at office desk with spectacles on head feeling tired. Stressed casual business woman feeling eye pain while overworking on desktop computer.

Do you have a frustrating boss? Here are three very common ways your manager might be pushing your buttons, and how to push back.

I once had a boss who declared, “If you’re not in the office, you’re not working.” Yes, I did have to suppress an eye-roll.

He once came and picked me up in his SUV during a snowstorm, drove the 20-minute commute in 2 hours. Then we left 2 hours later, because the storm grew worse.

But at least we got in those 2 hours of “face time.”

We all share funny stories about our quirky managers – past and present. The truth is, the quality of your relationship with your manager significantly impacts the quality of your work life. So when he or she behaves like a knucklehead, it can be frustrating.

But remember, many managers are not trained well to be managers. Often their blunders aren’t malicious in nature, they simply haven’t been taught a better way to manage. Or, they’re simply imitating managers they’ve had.

It’s why I continually recommend that you work on the manager issues instead of simply succumbing to them – or running away. Does that take cojones? Yes, in fact sometimes it does!

This week’s column for The Muse looks at three super-annoying things bosses do. Lucky for you, I also suggest how you might be able to deal with them. So check it out and try some new approaches.
