Don’t Burn Out in Your Job Search

Let’s face it. A job search is a tough gig. You’re putting yourself out there day after day, selling, asking, talking. Some days you’re nailing it, and others you’re face planting. And it’s all good, all leading you to a better place, and it’s all helping you grow.

.

But growing can be tough business. Check out a weed growing in a sidewalk crack. Man, they really had to fight for that. Just like you’re doing to find that next perfect job for you.

.

So in the process of the often-brutal job search, I wanted to give you a few tips for how to take care of yourself during it. Yes, it’s important for you to do all the things you need to do. It’s also important to take care of yourself, get enough sleep, eat the right stuff.

.

And here are three more difference-making strategies that will really help you in your journey.

.

1. Keep your face to the sun. Literally.

.

No matter what’s happening in your job search, studies show that warm and sunny weather lifts your mood and lightens your perspective – especially if you are able to go outside and enjoy it.

.

Exposing your skin to sunlight heightens the production of vitamin D, thereby producing the brain drug serotonin, and viola, you are moving up the happier mood scale. Even if it’s crisp and wintery, you’ll still benefit from a walk outside.

.

Your next best option might be to check into a light box, made specifically to help your body through cold, dark winters. Though it’s not the same as a walk in the park, it’s a close second.

.

2. Lift weights.

.

When I committed to working out each morning at 6 am, my life changed. I know, it sounds horrid if you don’t already do it. But the truth (and science) is, that there’s no better way to start your day.

But I’m talking about more than just 30 minutes on the treadmill or elliptical. I’m talking about getting your hands on some free weights, or facing off with the resistance weight machine.

.

In addition to the amazing physical and emotional/brain boost that exercise provides, you’ll feel more confident in how you look and carry yourself.

.

Besides, there’s nothing you need to kick ass more in a job search than feeling strong.

.

Added benefit? Fitness expert John Carrico saysWeight training teaches you to push yourself when everything tells you to stop, when your muscles start to give out and it burns and it hurts.” Hm… Kind of like the job search, right?

.

So much of your success in the job search comes from venturing outside of your comfort zone. Pick up some weights, and see what happens.

.

3. Laugh. Intentionally.

.

No matter how your job search has gone, laughter will improve your mood and your outlook. Research from the University of Maryland Medical Center concludes that a good sense of humor, and the ability to reframe stressful experiences with humor, will go a long way in reinvigorating you after a tough day in the job search.

.

Whether it’s movies, funny friends, or laughter yoga (speaking of out of your comfort zone…) , find a way to dispel the negative consequences and find some comic relief.

.

Now, take a deep breath and decide what action you take so that you’ll stay healthy and whole in your job search!
